Tea grade OP is the first quality of the traditional tea hierarchy. Commonly known as ‘’Orange Pekoe’’ which are generally highest in tea grading by the manufacturers, however, OP turn in to second place to the tea grade FOP (“Flowery Orange Pekoe’’). When plucking tea by hand usually there are 3 tender leaves in one pluck. Basically this fresh sprig professionally classified into flowery bud together with 2 other tender leaves in one shoot. The second leaf of a sprig is evaluating as OP by tradition as at the end product, in which almost whole leaf can be seen as a long wiry tea or half-open wiry tea in radish black color.
When brewing OP in boiled water, the dry rolled leaf began to open infusing liquor into the hot water. These bigger leafy tea types are mostly manufactured by the tea factories in South, South East, Sabaragamuwa, Mid highland areas of Sri Lanka. Elevations are various from lower to mid higher levels in altitude. Teas are available from both season and off-season varying the quantities.
